- Reading a key signature
- How many sharps or flats a key has

How to practice
- Sharps: take the last sharp and go up one letter. Three sharps end on G♯, so the key is A major.
- Flats: the second-to-last flat names the key. One flat is F major.
- The relative minor starts three semitones below its major key and shares its signature.
Learn it first
A key signature is the group of sharps or flats written at the start of every staff, right after the clef. It tells you which notes are sharp or flat all the way through the music, and which key the music is in: one major key, or its relative minor.
Questions about key signature practice
- What is the fastest way to learn key signatures?
- Learn the order of sharps (F C G D A E B) and flats (B E A D G C F), then the two shortcuts: last sharp up a letter, and second-to-last flat. Then practice until you name each key without counting.
- How do I know if a key signature is major or minor?
- The signature alone fits both a major key and its relative minor. Look at the music: minor keys usually raise their 7th note, and pieces tend to start and end on the tonic chord.
- Is this key signature practice free?
- Yes, with no account. The course adds the interactive circle of fifths, graded quizzes and timed sprints in the practice arena.
