How to practice

- Natural minor uses the key signature of its relative major.
- Harmonic minor raises the 7th; melodic minor raises the 6th and 7th going up.
Learn it first
A major scale is eight notes from one note up to the same letter an octave higher, following one fixed pattern of steps: tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone (whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half). C major uses only the white keys: C D E F G A B C.
Questions about scale practice
- How do you identify a scale?
- Find the first note, then check the pattern of tones and semitones and any raised notes. A major scale follows T T S T T T S; harmonic minor has a raised 7th and a three-semitone step between its 6th and 7th notes.
- Why can’t a major scale mix sharps and flats?
- Each letter is used once, in order, so a scale needs only sharps or only flats. That is why every major key has a key signature of one kind.
- Is this scale practice free?
- Yes, with no account. The course adds writing scales on the staff and keyboard, sound, and graded quizzes.
